Marlowe Fire & Security is delighted to announce that our Passive Fire Protection division has been awarded LPCB approval and is now listed in the Red Book Live for LPS 1531 certification: Requirements for LPCB Approval and Listing of Companies installing construction elements to provide compartmentation in buildings.

As with any fire protection product, fire doors will only perform properly if they are correctly installed and maintained. Poor installation can mean that an otherwise well-manufactured door fails to provide the required performance in the event of a fire. Similarly, regular inspections and maintenance is imperative to ensure the continued protection of your people and property.

Third Party Certification is the best assurance of quality when looking for a provider to help meet your fire safety requirements. It offers independent verification and evidence that a company is competent and working to the appropriate standards and best practice for the specific service you require.

LPS 1531 certification demonstrates our commitment to high standards and our ability to install, inspect, maintain and repair fire doors in accordance with LPCB standards and helps building owners towards meeting their own obligations under the Regulatory Reform Order (Fire Safety) 2005.

Paul Mather, Managing Director at Marlowe Fire & Security commented:

“Marlowe Fire & Security is built on a foundation of continuous improvement, a philosophy that is deeply embedded throughout our business. This achievement evidences how we operate to the highest possible standards and our customers can be assured of our competency and our dedication to providing them with the highest levels of quality and service.”

We are delighted to announce that through our dedication to the highest standards we have successfully completed the necessary stages for certification under the FIRAS scheme for Passive Fire Protection (Certificate Number: GX5490) for:

  • Penetration Sealing (fire stopping)
  • Timber Fire Doors

This achievement, adds to our existing accreditations, reflects the hard work of our Team Members and dedication throughout the business to the continual improvement of standards.

What is FIRAS?

FIRAS is a voluntary, third party certification scheme for installation contractors of both passive and active fire protection systems, operated by Warringtonfire and accredited by UKAS to BS EN ISO/IEC 17065:2012.

Warringtonfire’s FIRAS scheme for installers has been instrumental in improving the installation and maintenance standards of passive and active fire protection products and systems.

FIRAS is the mark of endorsement of competency in the installation of products and systems, vital for achieving the protection required.

Why choose a FIRAS certified installation contractor?

FIRAS certified contractors are required to undergo a three-stage assessment process, and only when the applicant contractor has satisfied all of these criteria is certification granted:

  1. Assessment of office management systems
  2. Assessment of workmanship of site for all trade disciplines for which certification is sought
  3. Competence assessment of supervisory and installation employees

All FIRAS site inspectors and sprinkler engineers have technical and practical knowledge and experience in fire protection. Certification requirements have been developed with UK trade associations including:

  • Association for Specialist Fire Protection (ASFP) – Passive fire protection of building structural steel frame, penetration seals (fire stopping), cavity barriers
  • British Woodworking Federation (BWF) – Timber fire doors
  • Glass & Glazing Federation (GGF) – Fire rated glazed screens
  • Door and Hardware Federation (DHF) – Steel fire doors and hardware
  • British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Association (BAFSA) – Residential, domestic, commercial and industrial sprinkler systems
  • XACT – Residential, domestic sprinkler design and installation training

FIRAS certified contractors are subject to an annual audit of their offices and ongoing, random surveillance site inspections where competence and workmanship are assessed.

FIRAS certified contractors are required to log ‘contracts in hand’ on the FIRAS online database. A ‘Certificate of Conformity (Compliance)’ for the completed works is issued from the FIRAS online database.

FIRAS certification is awarded to the contracting company, not the individual employees. Should a contractor wish to increase their scope of certification, a separate application must be made to attain the additional certification.

Paul Mather, Managing Director of Marlowe Fire & Security commented:

“We are delighted to have expanded our accreditations to incorporate the FIRAS scheme for Passive Fire Protection. The accreditation recognises the professionalism that we strive for and provides assurance to our customers that the work will be carried out correctly, in accordance with industry standards. This award allows us to further support our customers in meeting their legal obligations and developing a fit for purpose fire life safety strategy, ensuring they protect their people and property.”

Following a recent audit from BAFE (British Approvals for Fire Equipment), Marlowe Fire & Security is delighted to announce that we are now certified in accordance with the BAFE Fixed Gaseous Fire Extinguishing Systems SP203-3 Scheme.

This BAFE Scheme has been developed to permit organisations involved with the design and/or installation and/or commissioning/handover and/or maintenance of fixed gaseous fire extinguishing systems to become third party certificated and listed as recognition of their competence to undertake their scope of work.

By so doing, the certificates issued by these organisations on completion of their work will provide proof of competence as required by the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 for England & Wales, the Fire (Scotland) Act and the Fire Safety Regulations (Northern Ireland) and give the Client and relevant enforcing authorities e.g. the Fire & Rescue Services and Building Control, confidence that the work has been correctly undertaken.

Marlowe Fire & Security is proud to be accredited by this independent registration body. Third Party Certification is the best assurance of quality when looking for a provider to help meet your fire safety requirements.

We are pleased to announce that through our dedication to the highest standards, we have successfully completed our NSI audit and our NSI NACOSS Gold and ARC Gold approval has been upgraded to BS7858:2019.

BS7858 clearance is a code of practice set by the BSI which provides an employment screening standard for companies looking to meet the high standards required for candidates working in a secure or high-risk environment.

In 2019, the old standard for vetting of security staff was withdrawn and replaced with BS7858:2019 ‘Security screening of individuals employed in a security environment – Code of Practice’. The new standard replaced the former code with an updated view of how security employees should be vetted.

The new standard came into force on April 1st 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, our April audit with the NSI was rescheduled for July at which we were approved for both Marlowe Fire & Security Ltd and Marlowe Connect, our Cat II Alarm and Video Receiving Centre, based in Birchwood, Warrington.

The revision of BS7858 has widened its scope making it more applicable to a working environment outside the traditional security sector. The theme of the standard is biased more towards risk with an emphasis on risk assessment.

More responsibility is placed on the role of senior management to provide, for example, appropriate resource to ensure there is an effective screening process in place. Some clauses such as the requirement for character references have been removed and the use of automation is now recognised within the standard.

The ever growing popularity of social media as a source of information is recognised by identifying that it can be used as supplementary information but will not replace the use of traditional sources required elsewhere in the standard.

Mark Redding, Compliance Director commented: “Our rigorous and effective screening process and our compliance with this new standard is of paramount importance and we are delighted to be approved by the NSI. The NSI ARC Gold scheme is a certification that we greatly value and I would like to thank all of our Team members who have worked hard to maintain this distinguished credential. “
